My job is to teach my client, Bill, the best way to train his dog. Dakota a strong willed Chocolate Lab pulls and sniffs and is very distracted while heeling.
One of the key ingredients to teach proper walking is on a loose lead.
My client was holding the lead snug holding him in place while walking. This promotes more pulling.
Once my client began walking Dakota on a loose lead and used the pop the lead technique in the opposite direction the dog is faulting followed by verbal praise when he begins walking in proper heel position, Dakota began to walk better. This is called pop n praise.
We trained today in an outside shopping area. There were distractions with people walking by. The challenge was to teach Dakota to be attentive and develop that all important eye contact. When you have eye contact with your dog it will listen and be responsive.
Good lesson!
